Introduction to Topic

The topic that I chose to investigate for my independent project was the field of veterinary medicine.  I selected this topic because I have always been fascinated with animal, even at a young age I wanted to learn all that I could about them.  So when the time came to choose a topic to study, I knew exactly which I wanted to pick.

Project Description

My project as a whole included a lot of ups and downs.  Finding a mentor was a real challenge, but when I located Dr. Stevenson at Bel Air Vet, I felt a lot better about my project.  My shadowing experience was wonderful,  I got to meet a lot of great people and learned a lot about a field that I was interested in.  The employees at the vet were also very helpful and gave me advice for what to do after high school and things to do while in college.  My innovation was a pretty easy idea to come up with.  I knew that since a lot of clients wondered why it did not exist, it would be a great innovation to make.  I had some trouble with my product at first, but I ironed everything out and think I have developed a pretty good idea.

Experience Description

My shadowing description was very enlightening.  As I followed the various doctors around the office, I could tell that I was learning from talented and smart professionals. I was shown and told about things that I had absolutely no idea about.  For example, I learned about a disease known as Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, or IMHA.  This is a disease that is caused when the immune system accidentally produce antibodies that attack the red blood cells of the dog.  It causes the dog’s eyes, skin, and gums to turn a sickly yellow instead of the normal pink.  Not only did I learn about this, but I saw it first hand in a dog that was being watched.  Sadly, the dog couldn’t survive without a blood transfusion that the owner couldn’t afford, and the dog passed.  As bad as I felt for the dog and owner, I was interested in the disease and wanted to see what other rare diseases there were that I had never heard of.  My personal feelings when shadowing were happy, for the most part.  I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know everyone that worked there.  Everyone was extremely helpful and nice to me and I felt like I fit right in with what was happening.  I did have one negative experience when shadowing and that was an interaction with a customer that was unhappy when I was jotting down notes while his dog was being treated.  Dr. Stevenson immediately stepped in and explained that I was just shadowing him and was trying to learn.  The customer was still visibly upset so I decided to put away my notes for just that visit.  Other than that negative memory, I felt very pleased with my overall experience and would recommend that Bel Air Veterinary Hospital to anyone.

Innovation Description

The innovation that I have created is an all-in-one dog or cat medication product package.  This package will include flea, tick, and heartworm prevention medication as well as medication to prevent other types of common worms, including whipworms, hookworms, and ringworms.  While I was shadowing with Dr. Stevenson, there was a common frustration among the customers because they had to purchase two different products for their pet to treat and prevent typical house pet problems. They voiced the need for one single product to treat everything that they need my product solves this issue. The consumer can purchase both types of medications in one product without the need to make more than one purchase.  Nothing packaged this way is on the market currently and most likely won’t be for a long time.

Dr. Stevenson explained to me that the companies that produce the medications have not found a way to combine them. There is no reason that the medicines could not be packaged together and sold as a single item.  This innovation will also save the consumer money because the packaging costs will be less since it will only be one product needing to be packaged instead of two.  The closest items on the market to this idea would be Trifexis. Trifexis is a medication for pets that prevents fleas, heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms, but not ticks.  My product will prevent all of these parasites along with ticks, making my product superior, and beneficial to all household pets.

Heartworms, ringworms, tapeworms, and other parasites affect pets all the time and owners can fail to notice.  That’s why it is important to prevent them from getting infected.  Additionally, ticks can bring diseases with them, such as lyme disease, or rocky mountain spotted fever.  These diseases can be fatal in pets and owners should be proactive in the fight against them by using tick preventatives to lower the risk of receiving a disease.  Since most pet owners will only buy a single product for their furry friend, it puts the dog at risk for whatever that product doesn’t defend against.  However, with my new product, that would not be a problem since owners could buy a single product and still protect their pets against everything.  My product would also save owners from an expensive visit to the vet when their pet starts showing symptoms of these parasites and diseases by preventing them entirely.
